Taking Screenshots on any unrooted Android phone

A tutorial to taking Screenshots on unrooted phones. Below are three sections on how to take screenshots with an app, samsung phone and any other phone. Those phones receiving the Android 4.0 update will be lucky to have an in-built feature to take screen shots.

Paid App: No Root Screenshot It
Finally an app which works for unrooted phones. It also has some really good extra options to enhance and customize your screen shots:
- Save as a jpg or png file, and share anywhere
- Crop screenshots
- Annotate and draw on screenshots
- Screen shot status bar button
- Shake to screen shot
- Delayed screenshot timer
Before making the purchase, you should check  the user reviews to see if anybody with your phone model has had any issues. You can try out it's trial version, which gives you FIVE chances to try it out.
 Price: $4.99

Samsung
If you have a Samsung android phone you're pretty lucky to avoid any installations or set-up. To take screen shots, all you have to do is press the back and home button together. It is a bit tricky, because once you press back, the application closes. So the best way to take the screen shot is to press and keep on holding the back softkey until you reach the screen you wish to capture, and then press the home button. You'll hear a camera click sound and on the bottom of the screen, a text dialog will appear saying "Screen captured. Saved as Image file".
You can now view it in your gallery. It'll be saved in a separate folder.

Others (HTC, Motorola, LG, etc.)
If you don't want to root your phone or (like me) simply can't. Then you'll have to take the long way. That's downloading and installing SDK. This is actually a setup for android developers. I've outlined the installation step-by-step in the previous post.

On your phone,
1. Go to Settings>Applications. Then touch Development

2. Select the check box next to USB debugging

3. Now connect your android phone via the USB cable to your computer.

On your computer,
4. Go to the android SDK. Open Tools> ddms.

5. When the Dalvik Debug Monitor Service (ddms) opens, in the menu bar click Device> Screen Capture.

A new window like the one below will open. Navigate on your phone and click refresh for your phone's screen to appear.

You can now save the screen shot by clicking save.
